Choosing a cruiser bike

Cruisers are built for comfort over speed. Wide saddles, swept-back bars and an upright riding position make them easy and relaxed to ride, perfect for the beach path, the local cafe or a ride around the neighbourhood.

What to look for

• Gears: single speed is simple and low maintenance on flat ground, while 3 or 7 speeds help with Sydney's hills.
• Brakes: some cruisers use a coaster (back-pedal) brake, others have hand brakes. Hand brakes give more stopping power on hills.
• Frame style: a step-through frame is easier to get on and off, a step-over frame is a little stiffer.
• Extras: mudguards, a rear rack or a front basket make a cruiser much more practical.
