Choosing a folding bike

Folding bikes pack down small enough for the train, a car boot or an apartment hallway, so you can ride part of the way and take the bike with you the rest. They're ideal for mixed commutes and anyone short on storage space.

What to compare

• Folded size and weight: check it fits where you'll keep it, and that you can carry it up stairs.
• Fold speed: some fold in seconds with one hinge, others take a few more steps but pack smaller.
• Wheel size: 16 inch wheels pack smallest, 20 inch wheels ride more smoothly over bumps.
• Gears: a few gears make Sydney's hills far easier.

Electric folding bikes

Folding e-bikes add a motor to help with hills and longer trips. In NSW, look for EN 15194 certification, which means pedal assist up to 25 km/h and a maximum continuous rated power of 250W.
