Kids Mountain Bikes
Kids mountain bikes with real gears, brakes and suspension for trail adventures, sized and set up at Cranks Chatswood.
Choosing a kids mountain bike
A proper kids mountain bike is lighter and better built than a department-store bike, which makes a huge difference to how much fun your child has on the trail. Look for easy-reach brakes, simple gearing they can use, and a frame that fits now.
What to look for
- Weight: lighter bikes are easier to control, climb and lift over obstacles.
- Brakes: short-reach levers or hydraulic discs that small hands can pull properly.
- Gears: a single front ring with a wide range at the back keeps shifting simple.
- Suspension: a front fork helps on rougher trails, but a light rigid bike is often better for younger riders.
Sizing
Kids mountain bikes are sized by wheel: 20 inch wheels usually suit about 6 to 9 years, 24 inch about 8 to 12, and 26 or 27.5 inch the step up to an adult small frame. We size by height and inside leg, then set the seat, bars and brakes before you leave.
