Whether you're a weekend warrior or a daily commuter, keeping your bike in top shape ensures safer rides and longer component life. Here are the five essential maintenance tasks every rider should master.
1. Check Your Tyre Pressure Weekly
Proper tyre pressure is crucial for performance, comfort, and preventing flats. Road bikes typically run 80-130 PSI, mountain bikes 25-35 PSI, and hybrids 40-70 PSI. Check the sidewall of your tyre for the recommended range and invest in a quality floor pump with a gauge.
2. Keep Your Chain Clean and Lubricated
A dirty chain accelerates wear on your drivetrain. Clean your chain with a degreaser every few weeks, then apply a quality chain lube. Use wet lube in winter or wet conditions, dry lube for summer riding. Wipe off excess, a properly lubed chain shouldn't drip.
3. Inspect Your Brakes Regularly
Your brakes are your most important safety feature. Check brake pad wear monthly, most pads have wear indicators. For disc brakes, ensure rotors are straight and pads have at least 1mm of material. Squeeze each lever hard and check for sponginess or excessive travel.
4. Check Bolts and Quick Releases
Before each ride, check that your wheels are secure, your handlebars are tight, and your seat post hasn't slipped. Quick releases should be firmly closed, you should feel resistance about halfway through closing. Bolts should be snug but not over-tightened.
5. Keep It Clean
A clean bike isn't just about looks, dirt and grime accelerate wear. After wet rides, give your bike a quick wipe down. Monthly, do a proper wash with bike-specific cleaner. Avoid high-pressure water around bearings and seals.
