Wearing a helmet is the law in Australia, but beyond legal requirements, a good helmet can literally save your life. Yet many cyclists wear helmets that don't fit properly or are past their use-by date. Here's how to get it right.
Safety Standards
All helmets sold in Australia must meet AS/NZS 2063 standards. Look for the sticker inside the helmet. Many quality helmets also meet European (CE) or US (CPSC) standards. MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is an additional technology that helps reduce rotational forces in a crash.
Getting the Right Fit
A helmet should sit level on your head, about two fingers' width above your eyebrows. The straps should form a V shape under each ear, and the buckle should sit under your chin with just enough room for one finger. When you shake your head, the helmet shouldn't move independently.
Road vs Mountain vs Commuter
Road helmets prioritize ventilation and aerodynamics. Mountain bike helmets offer more coverage at the back and often include a visor. Commuter helmets tend to be more stylish and may include integrated lights or rain covers. Choose based on your primary riding style.
When to Replace Your Helmet
Replace your helmet immediately after any crash, even if there's no visible damage, the foam may be compromised. Otherwise, replace every 3-5 years as materials degrade with UV exposure and sweat. If in doubt, it's time for a new one.
Features Worth Paying For
MIPS technology is worth the extra cost for the added protection. A good retention system (the dial at the back) makes fine-tuning fit much easier. Reflective elements and integrated lights are great for commuters. Don't cheap out on comfort, you're more likely to wear a helmet that feels good.
