Sydney's North Shore is blessed with fantastic cycling infrastructure perfect for family rides. Here are our favourite routes, all tested and approved by the Cranks crew.
1. Lane Cove National Park Trail
Starting from Fullers Bridge, this mostly flat trail winds through beautiful bushland along the Lane Cove River. The 8km loop is perfect for kids aged 8+, with several picnic spots along the way. Watch out for walkers and keep left on the shared path.
2. Manly to Spit Bridge via Balgowlah
This scenic 10km route offers harbour views and a mix of dedicated bike paths and quiet streets. Start at Manly Wharf, head up through Balgowlah, and finish at the Spit for lunch at one of the waterside cafes. Mostly flat with a few gentle climbs.
3. Parramatta River Cycleway
Following the river from Parramatta to Sydney Olympic Park, this 20km path is almost entirely off-road. Flat as a pancake with plenty of playgrounds and cafes along the way. Perfect for younger riders on training wheels, the path is wide and well-maintained.
4. Chatswood to Macquarie Park
Our local favourite! This 6km route follows the M2 corridor through parks and along quiet streets. Start at Chatswood Oval, head north past the golf course, and finish at Macquarie Centre for a well-earned treat. A great starter route for families new to cycling.
Tips for Family Cycling
Always wear helmets (it's the law!), bring plenty of water, and pack snacks. Start early to avoid the heat, and don't be too ambitious with distance, it's about having fun, not setting records. If the kids are tired, that's okay, stop for a rest or turn back early.
Need bikes for the whole family? Pop into Cranks in Chatswood, we have a great range of kids bikes, plus we can fit the whole family with helmets and accessories.
